The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has introduced a new Aadhaar app, enabling real-time face authentication and QR code-based instant identity verification, replacing the need for physical Aadhaar cards or photocopies.
Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the beta version of the Aadhaar app via a post on social media platform X. He said identity authentication using Aadhaar is now as straightforward as completing a UPI payment.
The application is designed to simplify identity verification procedures at public places such as airports, hotels, and railway stations. With this new system, users can scan a QR code and authenticate their identity through facial recognition, directly from their mobile devices.
Vaishnaw highlighted that users maintain full control over their data, which is securely shared only with consent. He added that the app supports privacy and prevents unauthorized sharing, forgery, or misuse of Aadhaar credentials.
According to UIDAI, the app marks a transition to fully digital, user-consent-based identity verification. The technology ensures Aadhaar number holders no longer need to submit hard copies or allow third-party scanning.
The app is currently in beta testing and available to a limited group, including attendees of the Aadhaar Samvaad event. UIDAI stated that the public rollout will follow feedback from early users and partners.
Aadhaar Face Authentication is a core feature of the application, now being used in more than 150 million monthly transactions across sectors, indicating widespread adoption.
UIDAI also noted that verification points would soon display dedicated QR codes, similar to UPI-enabled locations. This infrastructure will allow seamless, secure Aadhaar authentication nationwide.
The app was showcased in a demonstration by the UIDAI tech centre, highlighting its potential to enhance user privacy and streamline access to services through Aadhaar instant authentication.
Officials confirmed ongoing collaboration with partners, including Sarvam AI, to integrate voice and fraud detection features in future updates.
